UPCOMING 2020 Mission to Kampong Spew Province – January 8 – 20, 2020
CHPAA delivers health education and integrative, primary medical care to the people of Cambodia. This is a unique opportunity for acupuncturists to provide a high volume of treatment for pain and a range of other problems as part of an interdisciplinary care team.
CHPAA was founded by two doctors; Seang Seng and Song Tan. They were in medical school in Cambodia when the Khmer Rouge took power and closed the universities and the hospitals. They both miraculously survived years in the killing fields and managed to emigrate to the US. They return to Cambodia annually to provide medical care and education. During CHPPA’s mission trips, they also mentor young Cambodian medical students.
In January 2019, a pain management team consisting of a L.Ac., P.T, and an DO treated more than 100 patients each day. Other providers included nurses, dentists, pharmacists, pediatricians and surgeons. Local Buddhist monks assisted with registration, and primary care doctors provide triage for up to 1,000 patients who lined up each day for much needed medical care. CHPAA’s mission is purely humanitarian, not religiously-based.
CHPAA’s patients are primarily small farmers. The older ones survived the Khmer Rouge and the killing fields in the 1970’s. Malnutrition is still common.
One woman reported frequent stomach pains.
Q: “What makes your stomach feel better”?”
A: “Food”.
We offered her some bread and a bottle of water before her treatment, which she ate and drank and with great concentration. She and many other weakened patients, responded well to very gentle treatments – sometimes just Pyonex press needles.
